These visits are centred around a private tree collection of some 300 rare and unusual cultivars built up over 40 years on the Southern slopes of The Quantocks AONB some 3 mile to the North of Taunton. This is followed by a short tour of the Wellington Town Park designed in 1903 and funded by Fox Brothers of Wellington from the proceeds of producing Puttees for the British Army. It concludes with the Pinetum at Nynehead Court probably originally planted with specimens supplied by Veitch’s Nursery in Exeter. The then owner Ayshford Sanford having spent his earlier life as a colonial administrator in Australia came back to rejuvenate the family estate which had been granted to the de Fleurie family by William the Conqueror. It will end with tea in the Orangery.

For those wishing to the make a whole weekend of the trip there are the mature specimens of rarer conifers at Knightshayes (National Trust) and the trees at Killerton. Over the Quantocks is Cannington Court West of Bridgwater. This is the former agricultural college now specialising in horticulture and whose re-vamped gardens are open for the NGS Gardens Open for Charity this weekend.

Cost per person to cover coffee, lunch and tea £10.

I/W would like to join this visit and enclose my/our cheque for the day for £..........
